Silurian Partnering with Hydro-Québec

Silurian Team

On the Forefront of Extreme Prediction

Silurian is partnering with the utility company Hydro-Québec to build cutting-edge weather foundation models for the electric grid. By leveraging the same AI technology that revolutionized chatbots and image generators, Silurian is shifting the focus to modelling the Earth itself from the ground up.

While weather forecasting has steadily improved over recent decades, its core methods remain unchanged. There is a significant need for improvement especially in the prediction of extreme weather events that most jeopardize grid reliability.

Silurian’s Earth Foundation Models detect patterns in extreme weather that conventional methods miss, reducing uncertainty and enabling grid operators to take proactive measures for reliability. Silurian provides more accurate and focused forecasts, which is particularly helpful in preparing grid operators for extreme storms, freezing rain, and other disruptive events.

Hydro-Québec’s partnership with Silurian underscores its leadership in tackling one of utilities' toughest challenges: accurately forecasting extreme weather. This collaboration will enhance Hydro-Québec’s ability to anticipate and respond to shifting weather conditions that conventional methods often fail to detect.

By minimizing uncertainty, Silurian and Hydro-Québec are taking a crucial step toward ensuring Canada’s grid is ready for whatever nature throws at it.
